Both men and women can suffer from laxity of the anus and anal tissue and many seek options for rejuvenation and tightening of the area.

This can now be offered using radiofrequency energy, which produces a heating effect in the tissue, causing contraction (of the collagen) and stimulation of new skin cells in the anus and anal tissue to rejuvenate and restore function. This contraction has an immediate tightening effect which is improved upon as the area naturally heals and makes new collagen.

We use the ThermiVa device which is a U.S. FDA approved radiofrequency machine for rejuvenating vaginal laxity in women as part of The O Concept™. We can also apply this same device to tighten the anus and rejuvenate the anal canal.

Treatment is suitable for men and women who have experienced laxity in the area due to anal sexual activity, or women who have experienced anal tearing during childbirth, or those who have simply lost elasticity in the area due to ageing or ill health.

The anus is made up of two separate muscles called sphincters – an internal and external sphincter. The inner sphincter is regarded as an involuntary muscle which means you cannot control it; it is automatically operated by the body as part of going to the toilet to pass stools. This also means that you cannot exercise it to strengthen it. The outer sphincter is a voluntary muscle, so you can control and exercise it – by clenching, pushing, and squeezing your anal muscles you are exercising the external sphincter.

The sphincter muscles can get damaged through childbirth or long-term difficulty with haemorrhoids (piles), as well as through penetration by objects (e.g. sex toys) or a penis during sexual activity. This can cause weakness or tearing in the muscle fibres of the sphincter, leading to anal laxity.

How does anal tightening work?

The ThermiVA uses radiofrequency energy (which delivers heat) to tighten up the external anus and sphincter muscles, as well as restoring the internal anal canal.

The heating of the tissues causes contraction and stimulates the remodelling of the collagen in the tissues to strengthen and support the muscles.

FAQ's

Your suitability for ThermiVa anal tightening will be established following a full consultation with our doctor, including discussing your full medical history.

Each person’s sexual and genital wellness needs are different, so a unique treatment combination will be tailored to suit you and the condition(s) or symptoms being addressed as part of The O Concept™ treatment programme. The O Concept™ is a specialised combination of sexual aesthetic treatments brought together to treat male and female sexual dysfunction. It was devised as a bespoke, tailor-made rejuvenation solution by Dr Sherif Wakil, a pioneer of excellence in sexual aesthetics. During your consultation, our doctor will be able to recommend the safest and most effective treatment options to rebuild your sexual well-being.

For anal tightening treatment, you should be in overall good health, without underlying medical conditions or concerns in the anal area. You will not be suitable for this treatment if you have any of the following: bleeding haemorrhoids, anal fissures (skin tears around the anus), polyps, anal warts, skin tags or skin folds around the anus, fecal incontinence or anal strictures/anal stenosis (scar tissue in your anal canal).

Women who are pregnant will also not be suitable for treatment.

ThermiVA treatment is a well-tolerated treatment with most people reporting a sensation of heating, within minimal pain. The settings on the device can be adjusted to suit each person and their tolerance, whilst also achieving an optimal result. More treatment sessions may be required if you need lower energy settings.

The sensation may feel unusual but should be no more painful than other colorectal examinations.

Treatment with the radio frequency tightening is recommended in a series of 3 separate treatment sessions, spaced one month apart. Full treatment is therefore completed over a 3-month period, including a final review appointment.

There is no real downtime associated with this treatment. You can return to your normal activities immediately following treatment. You may feel a sensation of warmth, tightness and mild discomfort for up to 24 hours after treatment, which will naturally resolve. Any pain can be managed with over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol.

You may notice that your bowel movements are disrupted for a day or so, this is often due to psychological influences causing mild constipation. It’s important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and to eat foods rich in fibre like fruit and vegetables. A mild laxative can be prescribed if you become constipated due to retention.

Radiofrequency treatment causes immediate tightening of tissues through contraction, followed by continual improvement in the area after each treatment session as new collagen is produced to repair the tissue.

Laxity will be improved, and the area strengthened and tightened.

Results can last for 12 months, depending on your lifestyle, and many people opt for a regular maintenance treatment session.
