Breast augmentation surgery or a breast enlargement surgery using breast implants is a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breast and enhance the shape using a silicone implant placed under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle.
Some women feel very self-conscious about small or under-developed breasts, or if they have asymmetries which means that there are differences between the sizes of each breast, thus they seek a solution to enhance their natural breast. Others would simply like a larger breast size to feel more attractive or look better in clothes.
Breast implant surgery is colloquially called a ‘boob job’ and is one of the most performed cosmetic surgery procedures.
Breast enlargement is rarely available on the NHS, save for medical cases such as severe asymmetry or breast malformation, and is a very generic option if funded. Our surgeon can discuss a bespoke breast surgery with you to give you the size and shape you desire.
Breast implants come in a variety of textures, sizes and shapes and can be placed under or over the muscle or in a bi-plane position. This will all be discussed during your consultation with your surgeon.
It is important to note that breast implants are usually talked about in terms of their volume rather than your desired bra cup size, although that can be considered when measuring your chest and discussing the options.
You can also choose how you want your new breast to appear, in terms of the shape and projection type, such that they drop down more naturally with less projection at the top, or have more volume at the top for a more rounded appearance in low-cut clothing. The appearance of your cleavage is also a consideration. Implant shape options include round or tear-drop shaped implants with low- or high-profile projections. This allows you to craft your breast shape and size to your desired outcome.
Bear in mind that breast implants do not last a lifetime and will likely need replacing with a future surgery in 10-15 years. Many women choose different implant types depending on their current age, lifestyle, and the look they want at the time.

How does it work?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure which is used to enhance or augment your natural breast size and shape. It can also be used to correct asymmetries or differences in breast sizes, or as a reconstructive option post trauma or other surgeries such as the removal of breast cancers.
A surgical incision is made in the skin underneath your breast, in the natural crease, and an implant is placed inside a pocket or cavity created within the breast by gently separating the breast tissue from the muscle.
The implant can be placed either underneath or on top of the chest muscle or in a Bi-plane position, depending on the desired look and feel of the breast. This decision is made during your consultation with your surgeon.

FAQ's
Your suitability for breast augmentation will be assessed by our surgeon who will decide if you are the correct candidate for the procedure. A full medical history will also be taken to make sure that there are no contraindications for you to have the procedure, such as any medication that you may be taking, your wound healing history, or past breast surgeries.
In general, most patients are suitable for breast implant surgery, if they are in good health. Pregnant and breast-feeding women are not suitable for surgical procedures.
The breast enhancement surgery will be performed using general anaesthesia so there is no pain experienced during the surgery itself. Post surgery some patients may have some mild to moderate discomfort but this is comfortably managed using pain relief medication if needed.
The operation can take 60 minutes in theatre.
After the surgery, and once the anaesthesia has worn off, your chest will feel tender and tight. Some people do experience mild side effects because of the anaesthesia so you will be monitored before you are discharged from our care.
You will need to wear a support bra or post-surgical garment 24/7 in the 6 weeks following your surgery to aid healing and support the tissue as your incisions heal. Some surgeons may request the garments are worn longer this depends on the healing process and surgeon preferences.
Pain, swelling, bruising, and tightness are common for the first few days and weeks post-surgery. Any pain and discomfort post-surgery can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication or medicines prescribed by our surgeon.
Many patients take one to two weeks off work before returning to normal activities and their job (depending on how strenuous the work). You should avoid strenuous exercise for at least a month. It is advised to avoid driving for 1-2 weeks too, partly due to the medical implications, but also because it may invalidate your vehicle insurance.
The full recovery from breast implant surgery can take up to three months.
The full results of breast augmentation will be visible after approximately 6-12 weeks once much of the swelling has gone, the skin has healed, and the breast area feels more natural.
After 3 months, you will have achieved the increase in size to your breast and be able to wear your desired clothes without the need for support garments.
Results of this surgery should last ten to fifteen years, depending on the breast implant type and how your body reacts to the implant. In some cases, revision surgery may be required if complications occur that affect scar tissue formation (capsular contraction), or if the implant gets damaged at any point. All the potential risks will be discussed during your consultation.
