Vaginoplasty is a reconstructive operation that aims to increase tightness of the vagina and rebuilds the pelvic floor.

It is very common for postpartum women to notice changes to the vagina following childbirth. These changes can range from urinary incontinence, stretching of the labia and stretching of the vagina, to vaginal prolapse. A vaginoplasty may be considered when the pelvic floor or vaginal tissue and muscles have become compromised, leading to a lessening of sensitivity and lost function. The aim of a vaginoplasty is to remodel and augment the vaginal tissue and muscles to restore lost laxity resulting in a tighter vagina.

This operation can also be combined with a labiaplasty when the labia has become compromised. A vaginoplasty doesn’t only treat functional issues, but also aesthetic ones. Some women desire a tighter vagina so to help enhance their sexual relations, giving them greater sensation and stimuli, re-awakening their sexual self. For many women this operation can be life changing, allowing them to rediscover their lost self from an intimate perspective.

How does it work?

Vaginoplasty can be carried out under either a general or local/sedation as a day case so you can return home the same day. A vaginoplasty procedure consists of firstly determining the level of tightening required. Once this has been decided, the extra skin inside the vagina is removed and the tissues beneath the skin are tightened using strong sutures.

Once the vaginal canal has been successfully closed, the mucosal skin (the skin which covers the surface of our internal organs) is then stitched closed.

FAQ's

Vaginoplasty may be considered if there has been excessive stretching, or slackness due to ageing. If a non-surgical approach has been considered or tried, then we may discuss the option of surgically tightening the vagina for a permanent result. Your suitability along with any contraindications will be discussed at a pre-treatment consultation.

The procedure will be carried out under either a general or local /sedation and therefore the treatment itself is considered painless. You will experience a deep ache from inside in the days following your procedure. You can also expect to notice some tenderness, swelling, bruising and soreness following the procedure for a few days up to around 10 days for some women. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief medication.

This operation takes approximately 1-2 hours.

It is advised that you may wish to take a few days off work following vaginoplasty so that you can recover in the privacy and comfort of your own home. You may feel a little sore, and so will likely benefit from rest and also remember to stay well hydrated. Most patients respond well to this operation and you will be able to go home on the same day. You should avoid any strenuous activity following surgery for at a least a week and going to the gym, exercising or sexual activity should be refrained from until you have had your follow up assessment.

Following a vaginoplasty, you will notice increased tightness in your vagina, and usually enhanced sexual sensation. Most women are delighted with the result of their vaginoplasty and go on to lead more fulfilling sex lives.
