The clitoral hood is an extension of the labia minora that covers the clitoris to protect it from over stimulation.

When aroused, the clitoral hood will retract to reveal the clitoris and allow for stimulation to the point of orgasm. In some cases, however, the clitoral hood (or pupice) is excessive, and this can interfere with stimulation, therefore decreasing or inhibiting the chance of orgasm.

There are several reasons a woman may seek to undergo a hoodectomy. The most common is to achieve heightened sexual satisfaction where the clitoral hood interferes with the ability to achieve an orgasm. This is closely followed by women experiencing discomfort or irritation when exercising, walking, or wearing tight clothing. Sometimes the clitoral hood can also slacken, and drape more heavily post childbirth or due to ageing, or the reason may simply be to improve the aesthetics of their genitalia.

No matter the reason, a hoodectomy can be performed at Dr. SW Clinics under local anaesthetic. During the operation, surplus skin will be removed by way of a bilateral excision so that the clitoris remains protected, but the overall appearance and function will be enhanced. This procedure can also be combined with labiaplasty to give an overall fully rejuvenated result.

FAQ's

You may be suitable to undergo a hoodectomy if you present symptoms that are associated with excess skin/tissue in this area such as: reduced sensation, inability to achieve orgasm, tenderness, or sensitivity.

The procedure will be carried out under local anaesthetic and therefore the treatment itself is considered painless. You will experience some tenderness, swelling, bruising and soreness following the procedure, usually for a few days; up to around 10 days for some women. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief medication.

This operation takes approximately one hour.

We would advise that you take a few days off work following your procedure so that you can relax and recover at home where you are comfortable. You should refrain from any strenuous activity for a couple of weeks at least, so that you allow your body time to fully heal. Your aftercare will be discussed prior to treatment so that you are fully informed and well prepared in advance of your procedure.

Once the excess skin and tissue has been removed, you will notice the difference right away. The clitoris will be more sensitive to stimulation and appear more aesthetically pleasing.
