Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), also known as female circumcision or female genital cutting, refers to the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other harmful procedures performed on female genital organs.
It is a violation of human rights and is internationally recognised as a form of gender-based violence and child abuse. FGM is practiced in different parts of the world, primarily in Africa, the Middle East, and some Asian countries.
FGM has immediate and long-term physical, psychological, and sexual health consequences. Long-term complications can include chronic pain, urinary and menstrual problems, psychological trauma, complications during childbirth, and sexual dysfunction.
