Dr SW Clinic is the home of regenerative medicine and one of the few clinics in the country experienced in micro-fragmented adipose tissue injections (Lipogems).

This revolutionary technology allows for the body to naturally heal itself. Using the power of innovative science and modern technology, Lipogems enhances the patients ability to heal using it’s own cells without the need for invasive surgery.

Traditional surgery for osteoarthritis of the joints may involve the following:

• Inflammation and infection
• Emotional stress and physical pain
• Rejection
• High costs
• Incompatibility with the body’s natural biology

Regenerative cell therapy is quick, efficient and can leave you instantly pain-free!

Benefits of the procedure

This procedure is completed under local anaesthetic. This means there is no need to be ‘put to sleep’. You walk in and walk out all within a few hours. Other benefits of the procedure are:

1. Quick: the procedure typically takes no more than a couple of hours start to finish
2. Efficient: unlike surgery, the procedure takes place whilst you are still awake.
3. Cost effective: this procedure is much cheaper than traditional surgical interventions.

Conditions we treat with regenerative cell therapy

This state of the art technique can be used across a range of specialties, including:
1. Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine
2. Spine
3. Aesthetics

Specific conditions

Osteoarthritis of the joint

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis in the UK affecting one in three adults over 45. To put simply, OA is ‘wear and tear’ of the joint and can cause pain, aching and stiffness over time. This tends to result in the joint only being able to provide limited movements. The most common joint to be affected by OA is the knee.

Dr SW Clinic is highly experienced in delivering regenerative cell therapy into the following problem areas:

• Knee
• Hip
• Shoulder
• Ankle

Although there is no cure for OA, research has shown that regenerative cell therapy can not only reduce pain and inflammation in the joint but ultimately negate the need for surgery altogether.

How does it work?

Step 1
Regenerative cell therapy is classed as a minimally invasive procedure that can take place under local anaesthetic. Step 1 involves preparation. Local anaesthetic is injected into the harvesting site and we wait 10-15 minutes for the area to get numb.

Step 2
Harvesting. At the stage, the consultant will typically remove fat from the flanks or abdomen. Whilst this process is similar to liposuction, the device we use is so state of the art the extraction of fat is minimally invasive and efficient.

Step 3
Implantation. Once the fat has been removed it’s time to implant it into the offending joint. Once injected, the process of healing is kick-started and the body’s natural capacity to heal is stimulated.

FAQ's

At consultation, your Consultant will be able to tell you if you are suitable. We may need an MRI to confirm next steps.

The procedure is relatively pain free. Your harvesting site will be numbed with local anaesthetic. If you’re in any pain post-procedure, you will be discharged with pain relief.

Regenerative cell therapy takes between 1-2hours.

All procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic so within one and three hours of your procedure, patients are typically discharged. All patients should have a chaperone (friend, family member or carer) to collect them after their procedure and remain with them on their journey home.
You are likely to feel mild pain in the joint for two to three days, however the pain can be managed with regular strength painkillers.
Post procedure, you should refrain from strenuous activity for at least two weeks.

Patients can feel immediate pain-relief. If this is not the case, do not worry, effects may take some days to come through and research has found it could take between 3-5 days.

Depending on the joint issue you present with, there may be a couple of ways to diagnose your pain and thereby find you a lasting solution.

Firstly, you will have a telephone consultation with one of our highly trained patient advisors. This patient advisor will ask you a series of pre-assessment questions to better understand your personal needs.

You will then be invited for a consultation with our leading expert – Dr Sherif Wakil. Dr Wakil has over two decades experience in regenerative medicine. To better gain an understanding of the problem, Dr Wakil may suggest you receive an x-ray or an MRI.

What is an x-ray?
A diagnostic test that can help identify what issues are causing the pain.

What is an MRI?
A diagnostic test using a magnetic field and radio waves for a detailed image of both joint and soft tissue.

What is an ultrasound?
Typically a handheld device that provides an on the spot image of the soft tissue.

Once we’ve received the results of your diagnostic tests, our team will be able to advise you on next best steps to get you pain free.
